Sprite mesh unity

if you want them in local space, mesh.bounds returns the Unity Bounds in local space. This is a basic of Unity and you do it all the time. However. With the new sprite, that is to say SpriteRenderer, there's no real access to the mesh as far as I know.

Unity 4.3 added sorting layers and manual sorting orders to all renderers, however only the sprite renderer exposes the values in the inspector. If you're making a 2D game and want to use a text mesh, you're SOL if you want to tweak the sorting in the inspector.
